Brazil will reduce the amount of sugar in cakes, filled cookies, sugary drinks, chocolate drinks and dairy products.
In the agreement established between the Ministry of Health and the food sector associations, the country committed to removing 144,000 tons of sugar from food by 2022 - the amount is equivalent to the weight of 24,000 elephants.
As a result, Brazil becomes one of the first countries in the world to adopt actions to reduce the amount of sugar in processed foods.
The main objective of the agreement is to reduce the number of diseases caused by heavy consumption of sugar, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. According to the World Health Organization, Brazilians ingest, per day, the equivalent of 18 teaspoons of sugar, although 12.
Some experts, however, claim that the measure is not enough to solve the problem, as the rate of sugar that will be removed from the food composition will be very small and will not make much difference in the diet of the Brazilians.
As a solution, they indicate increasing the price of foods that are harmful to health and teaching the population to analyze labels (a table that is on the product's packaging and shows its composition).
