The June festivities arose in Catholic European countries and were called “Joaninas”, in honor of a Catholic saint, St. John.
They were brought to Brazil in the colonial period by the Portuguese. At first, only the feast of St. John was celebrated, then, as the days of St. Peter and St. Anthony happened in the same month, they were incorporated into the June festivities.
With the passage of time, the June festivities gained characteristics from the various regions of our country. They are now part of Brazilian folklore, with bonfires, colorful flags, typical food stalls and square dances. They are as popular as carnival.
Although the whole of Brazil celebrates June festivities, it is in the Northeast region that they are more widespread. Campina Grande, in Paraíba, and Caruaru, in Pernambuco, are cities famous for their parties and square dance contests.
The month of June is also used to thank the saints for the abundant harvest, especially corn. No wonder that most of the typical foods of June festivals are made from corn, after all, June is the month to harvest it in many regions.
There is an option for all tastes: mush, curau, cooked corn, hominy (or mungunzá), couscous, popcorn, corn cake, corn bread, cornmeal cake. Other typical foods from the June period are pe de moleque, paçoca, rice pudding and quentão. Eta train well!
The costumes for square dancing are a spectacle in their own right. The men, dressed in checkered shirts, and the women, in colorful calico dresses and straw hats, portray a country country. In many states, large gang competitions are held.
