For several years, Vizio brand televisions have been the most sold in the United States. And with good reason: they combine excellent image quality (they keep winning awards from the specialized press) with incredibly prices low: buy a gigantic 65-inch Vizio with 4K resolution for just $850 ─ half what the others cost brands.

But there was a catch: secretly, the Vizios monitored everything people watched. Television used a technique called automated content recognition (ACR) to identify what it was displaying—it compared the pixel sequences to a database maintained by the manufacturer. This way, I could not only know which channel or TV show was being watched, but also track other content sources, such as DVDs, Blu-ray and internet videos.
This information was recorded in a dossier, which identified in detail the habits of each family, and offered to advertisers ─ who could use it to show targeted advertisements. All in the background, and without the user's consent. According to the US government, 11 million families were monitored.
This had been happening since 2014, but it only came to light when the TV maker was sold to the Chinese Le Eco, in the second half of the last year, and a document ended up revealing the practice ─ Vizio intended to create a separate company just to explore the data collected. She was fined $2.2 million by the US government, apologized to her consumers and said the monitoring can be disabled (you must access the TV settings menu and turn off the Smart item Interactivity).
