A message from Emicida's sweet blackberries

In September 2018, rapper Emicida decided to launch another journey, using words as a tool. This time, the adventure was his first children's book: blackberries, published by Companhia das Letrinhas with illustrations by Aldo Fabrini, emerged from a song with the same name. And it talks about the importance of being proud – from the earliest years of life – of who we are.

In the short story, but full of meanings, Emicida uses figures like Martin Luther King and Zumbi dos Palmares to remember a conversation she had with her first daughter, Estela. In this chat, he and the girl talk about blackberries, these little fruits and that the darker they are, the sweeter they will be.

I invite you to read and reread the conclusion that the girl draws from this thought. And to reflect on her final sentence to her father: “Because I'm little black too”.

Oh, don't you know who Martin Luther King and Zumbi dos Palmares were? The book blackberries explains! Good reading!
