Once upon a time there was a virtuoso Russian carpenter named Sergei, who made his living carving beautiful wooden objects: musical instruments, toys… Every week, he faced the cold of the forest to look for wood and thus build new objects. One morning, going out to collect the wood, he found the entire field covered in a thick layer of snow. The night had been difficult. He prayed. All the wood he found on the way was wet and only used to make a fire.
Dejected by fatigue, he decided to return to his home and try his luck the next day. As he was turning around, a splendid wooden log, the most beautiful he had ever seen in his life, caught his eye. Quick as a flash he returned to his studio, but several days passed before he decided what to cut. Finally, he decided to make a precious doll.
She was so beautiful, he decided not to sell her to keep her company. “You were called Matrioska,” he told the inert figure. Each morning, when he got up, he spoke with his companion. “Good morning, Matrioska”. One day, she replied: “Good morning, Sergei”. The carpenter was surprised, but instead of feeling scared he was happy to have someone to talk to.
In time, the carpenter realized that Matrioska was sad and asked her what was going on. She replied that she saw that everyone had a son or daughter and she wanted one. “I will have to open you up and that will be painful” – replied Sergei. And she said, "In life, the important things require a little sacrifice." And without thinking twice he carved out a smaller replica and called it Trioska. She no longer felt alone.
The maternal instinct also took hold of Trioska and Sergei agreed that she would also have a child, would be called Oska. But Oska also wanted a descendant. The carpenter said that this time the wood could give rise to a bad doll. Oska didn't give up. After thinking, he carved a doll, very small and with a mustache, and named it Ka. And he put it in front of the mirror and said, "You're a man, you can't have children!"
So he put Ka inside Oska. Oska within Trioska and Trioska within Matrioska. One day, mysteriously, Matrioska disappeared with her entire family inside. Sergei was devastated.
