The burnings in the Amazon, which take over the recent news, are also a subject in the classrooms. Because of this, around 40 students from Escola da Árvore (DF), aged between 4 and 11, came to the Chamber of Deputies to demonstrate. The protest against the destruction of the forest and for the protection of the environment took place on Thursday, August 29, 2019.
“The idea of coming came from them. All week, they brought all this anguish with what's going on there. Many were distressed and even tearful”, explained educator Ramon Almeida, who accompanied the group. The topic was debated in the classroom, with the participation of some parents of students specializing in the environment and indigenous peoples.
Holding a sign that said “Yes to the forest, no to the fires”, Iriê Gustavo de Almeida Firmino, 10, justified his message. “Without the Amazon, we are going to die, it gives us oxygen to breathe”, he said.
Congresswoman Joenia Wapichana (Rede/RR) received the group and highlighted the importance of the initiative. “The highest law in the country says that the environment, indigenous peoples, the Amazon, must be protected. And everyone has this role of taking care of this rich heritage, so important not only for Brazil, but for the entire planet, and for future generations. That is why the presence of children is so significant”, said the indigenous parliamentarian. “The child's voice is a sacred voice. So it's only fair that you're here showing citizenship as a child”, she concluded.
