The play tells the story of Dewey Finn, singer and guitarist who, in need of money, pretends to be a substitute teacher. Everything changes when Dewey listens to his students in music class and because of his desire to become rock star, decides to form a band with them and enter it in a music contest, the Battle of Bands.
The problem is that Dewey has to hide the project from both the children's parents and other teachers, as the band is not part of his role and, in fact, he is not even a teacher.
