1) French absolutism began to show signs of crisis towards the end of the reign of Louis XIV. As an absolutist monarchy, French society was divided into three orders:
2) Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774, and was expected to initiate much-needed reforms to the kingdom, but, having been pressured by the nobility and high clergy, he did not act diligently. He sought revenge on England by militarily supporting:
