Text for questions 1 to 5

The fish

Having the crystalline lake as its cradle,
Free the fish, swimming all innocently,
Fear or fear of the future does not feel,
For he lives unaware of the fatal fate.

If at the end of a long, thin wire
The bait sights, dunks it unconscious,
Getting the poor fish all of a sudden,
Attached to the rogue fisherman's hook.

The peasant, also, from our State,
Before the election campaign, poor thing!
That fish is as lucky.

Before the election, party, laughter and taste,
After the election, tax and more tax.
Poor backwoods from the northern backlands!

Patativa do Assaré

Questions

1) Analyze the following verse of the poem: “Having the crystalline lake as a cradle”, what is the meaning of the word cradle in this context?

2) Note the meanings of the entry "unwary":

unwary
(Latin incautus, -a, -a)
adjective

1.That has no caution or prudence.

2.Which is innocent and without malice.

“incautious”, in Priberam Dictionary of the Portuguese Language [online], 2008-2013, https://www.priberam.pt/dlpo/incauto [viewed 06-15-2017].

Now analyze the following verses: "The fish is free, swimming all innocently, / Fear or fear of the future, he does not feel / Because he lives unguarded of the fatal fate…” According to the information contained in these verses, which meaning is the most correct for the action of the fish? Explain why?

3) "If at the end of a long, thin wire
The bait sights, dunks it unconscious,
Getting the poor fish all of a sudden,
Attached to the hook of the rogue fisherman…” Explain, based on the reading of these verses, the meaning of the term “rogue fisherman”.

4) Read the last two stanzas of the poem and explain the comparison made by the poet.

5) What is the criticism that the poet makes in this poem “O Peixe”? Do you agree with the statement made by Patativa do Assaré? Explain?

6) Now it's your turn to write a poem. The information contained therein must consist of an implicit criticism of our country's policy. Follow the rhyming scheme adopted by the poet, as well as the amount of verses and stanzas. Good work!
