Among the twelve gods of Olympus lived Hestia, the goddess of the flame that never quenches. Protector of homes, cities, families, its flames – considered sacred among the ancient Greeks – came directly from the Sun, the king of the Stars.
Hestia was also the goddess who held the key to Olympus given by Zeus. She was responsible for looking after the holy city and never leaving. Therefore, when a city was founded, the fire of Hestia was lit, so that the place would be protected from wars, disease and hunger.
The city of Olympia, famous for hosting the Olympic Games in antiquity, preserves the temple of Hestia, where the flame is kept burning. From there also comes the fire of the Olympic torch, lit in the temple of Hera, wife of Zeus.
