Dedicating yourself to leisure is a way to connect with others, take care of your health and discover a life full of meaning and joy
We learn early the value of study and work. But leisure is not given the same importance. Maybe this lack of habit of doing something for pure pleasure, like joining a sports group or simply indulging in idleness, explain why we come to feel guilty when we are not dedicated to a task “productive”. In a world that is guided by the constant achievement of goals and results, having fun can be a reason for anguish – it even seems like a certificate of bad use of time. “We entered a productivist logic and found it difficult to get rid of it”, he says Christianne Gomes, professor and researcher of Leisure Studies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). "We hear that 'time is money' and so spending hours contemplating, reflecting, and understanding the essence of things seems like a waste."
Having fun, in addition to being necessary, is good for mental health. If the activity involves exercising, it brings gains for the physique as well. “Those who enjoy leisure reach a more pleasant and richer existence from a personal, affective, social, family and cultural point of view,” explains Christianne. According to her, including breaks in the routine to do what you like ensures balance and quality of life. The practice can even become a strong ally against anxiety and depression. “Resting is important because it indicates respect for our limits and compliance with our needs”, says the teacher.
The new generations are more attentive to what brings happiness, even reconciling work with a worldview that includes personal satisfaction and leisure. But older people generally need to learn that they are entitled to it. […]
