NAME:
In the African continent, as well as in others, slavery already existed for a long time. People were enslaved by defaulting on debts, punishment for crimes or being prisoners of war.
The Europeans arrived on the African continent and began to buy slaves, to resell on other continents, so that they could do forced labor.
With the growth in the slave trade with the Europeans, the number of people enslaved increased a lot, thousands of people were captured without any reason.
Scene of people captured and enslaved in Africa. Image-based engraving from the book Missionary travels and researches in South Africa, by David Livingstone, 1857
The slave trade was profitable for the Portuguese Crown and for all who participated in it, so the Europeans encouraged wars between African peoples, to increase the capture of people.
For centuries, millions of Africans were forcibly uprooted from their homes and on a risky and unhealthy journey to their new destinations. They were carried in the holds of slave ships, chained together, suffering from hunger and thirst. About half of them died during the journey and many arrived weak and sick.
