NAME:
On Ilha de Deus, in Pernambuco, the houses are suspended under pieces of wood stuck in the mud of the mangrove. From a very early age, children gather, but it is not for playing. They work like big people.
The agility of the little hands shows that the activity has already become routine. Laiza is only 6 years old and follows the fate of so many children in the region. His job, since he was 5 years old, has been to clean the sururu one by one, a small shellfish that arrives dirty with mud and has to be removed from the shell. The journey is exhausting and only ends when buckets and cans are empty. Even adults complain about the tiresome task.
