Now clarify your doubts regarding the use of each one and don't make any more mistakes!

Discriminate

The verb comes from Latin "discriminate". From this origin, then, the use of the vowel “i” in its initial syllable is explained. It is used to determine everything here that makes a difference, that separates, differentiates something or someone.

The word has some synonyms in the Portuguese language, such as separating and segregating. Furthermore, it is very much associated with crimes of “discrimination” of any kind, as the attitude is part of the act of discriminating against a person.

Check out the various examples where you can apply the verb:

  • Clothes are broken down by color in your closet.
  • He discriminates people by skin color, that's wrong.
  • It's important to break down what you can and cannot do.
  • Discriminating people for their sexual orientation is an outdated idea.

All words derived from “discriminate” being used in the same sense must also be written with “i” in the initial syllable. Check out the examples:

  • This is a completely discriminatory act on your part.
  • Racial discrimination must end in this country!
  • He was discriminated against just for being poor and black.
  • Blacks are the ones who suffer most from discrimination.

Also check the conjugation of the verb in the Preterit perfect tense:

  • (I) discriminated
  • (You) discriminated
  • (He) discriminated
  • (We) discriminate
  • (You) discriminated
  • (They) discriminated

deciminate

Unlike the above verb, “to discriminate” has nothing to do with segregate. The verb means to exonerate, to absolve. It is formed by the union between the prefix “des”, which indicates “opposite action”, and the verb “criminate”, synonymous with accusing. In other words, to discriminate is precisely to take the blame from something or someone.

Check out some examples to better understand the verb:

  • Discriminating drugs is an always controversial issue in elections.
  • Will they ever discriminate against those innocents?
  • He ordered you to be discriminated against for the mistake.

Words derived from the verb are known as decriminalize and decriminalize. See the examples:

  • Marijuana decriminalization needs to be discussed.
  • It is important to decriminalize some types of drugs.

Follow the conjugation of the verb in the past perfect tense:

  • (I) discriminated
  • (You) discriminated
  • (He) discriminated
  • (We) discriminate
  • (You) discriminated
  • (they) discriminated

Discrimination and Discrimination

Both forms also cause confusion in the Portuguese language. They are mainly used to address social issues and, therefore, can end up with the completely wrong meaning.

“Discrimination” should always be thought of as an example of prejudice. A tip is to associate it with racial discrimination, for example. On the other hand, “Discrimination” is used to speak of liberation, innocence. In that case, always remember the marijuana discrimination.

Paronyms

What explains the linguistic phenomenon between Discriminate and Discriminate is the occurrence of so-called paronyms. They are words written and spoken in a similar way, but with different meanings.
