Way or way? How do you write? Discover the right way to write

Way or way? What's the difference? With several possible meanings, the word “way” is very confusing at the time of writing. Some people change the “j” to “g” and end up writing “geito”, which is incorrect.

Follow the examples and learn how to properly use the word without error:

Way or way: discover the correct way to write the word

Way

The word originates from the Latin “jactu” (arrangement, skill) and is classified as a masculine noun. Thus, its adaptation to Portuguese followed its origins and also adopted the letter “j” as an initial. Furthermore, the consonant “j” is often used before diphthongs “ei”. Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule, such as the words foreigner and passenger.

Like the Latin word, “jeito” is also synonymous with arrangement, skill, but it can also take on other meanings. It can mean either a skill or an embarrassment, something to be fixed, or almost an offense. All this depends on the connotation given to speech and the use of the word.

Notice in the following sentences the different meanings that the word can adopt.

  • He's very good with tools. (abiliity)
  • There's no way, we'll have to close the account. (probability)
  • I gave my foot a bad hand yesterday. (lesion)
  • I'm embarrassed to speak in front of everyone. (embarrassment)
  • I'll fix it soon. (repair)
  • That was my way I found to solve the problem. (manner)
  • You're hopeless, it's always like this! (negative connotation)

Geito

The word written with the letter “g” does not exist in the Portuguese language. To write the word, only the consonant “j” should be used, forming “jeito”.

homophony

The doubt in writing between “j” and “g” is justified by a linguistic phenomenon in Portuguese, homophony. It explains the words that have the same phonetics, such as the consonants “g” and “j”.
