The name Jet Ski is a registered trademark of the Japanese Kawasaki industry, which also assembles motorcycles. But it has become so popular that watercraft of any brand are called a jet ski. It was the American Clayton Jacobson II who imagined the first jet ski, in the 1960s. Jacobson was a bicyclist and dreamed of doing extreme tricks in the water (at least he wouldn't get hurt so bad with each fall). He perfected the invention and, in the early 1970s, made a deal with Kawasaki, which bought the designs and built the first jet skis, offered as a year-end gift to stores that resold their products. Finally, in 1976, Kawasaki began selling the first jet ski models.
