  • Units of Measure and Conversion - Physics

After all, what is a unit of measure?

THE unit of measurement forms the decimal metric system. And here we will present the most important ones.

For this, it is first necessary to know the conversions from one measure to another to be able to do a mathematical calculation. Are they:

  • Quantity: length / Unit name: Meter / Symbol: m
  • Size: capacity/Unit name: Liter/Symbol: l
  •  Quantity: mass / Unit name: kilogram / Symbol: kg
  • Quantity: surface – area / Unit name: square meter / Symbol: m (2) squared.
  • Quantity: Agricultural measures / Unit name: are / Symbol: a
  • Quantity: Volume / Unit name: cubic meter / Symbol: m (3) cubed.
  • Quantity: time / Unit name: seconds / Symbol: s

Length measurements

It is unit of measurement is the most used in the world. To multiply by 10 just change the decimal to the left once, the amount of zeros.

If the objective is to change meter (m) to millimeter (mm) we must multiply by 1000 (10x10x10) which would be the same as moving the decimal point three spaces to the right.

1 meter is 1000 millimeters. If you want to convert meters (m) into kilometers (km) it is necessary to divide by 1000 (10 divided by 10 divided by 10).

Which would be the same as changing the decimal point three places to the left and 1 meter is equivalent to 0.001 km.

  • Standard unit of measure: meter (m)
  • Kilometers: 1 km = 1000 m
  • Hectometer: 1 hm = 100 m
  • Decameter: 1 dam = 10 m
  • Decimeter: 1 dm = 0.1 m
  • Centimeter: 1 cm = 0.01 m
  • Millimeter: 1 mm = 0.001 m

Examples

Converting 10 dam into cm:

dam - m - dm - cm

10 dam = 10 m = 1000 dm = 10000 cm

It's the same as moving the comma to the right in three places:

10 dam = 10000 cm

Converting 320 dm into Km:

dm – m – dam – hm – km

320 dm = 0.0320 km

Capacity measure

  • Kiloliter: 1 kl = 1000 l
  • Hectoliter: 1 hl = 100 l
  • Dekaliter: 1 dl = 10 l
  • Centiliter: 1 cl = 0.01 l
  • Milliliter: 1 ml = 0.001 l

Examples

Converting 20 ml into dl

ml - cl - dl

Comma must be shifted two decimal places to the left.

20 ml = 0.20 dl

mass measurements

  • Kilogram: 1 kg = 1000 g
  • Hectogram: 1 hg = 100 g
  • Decagram: 1 dkg = 10 g
  • Gram: 1 g = 1 g
  • Decigram: 1 dg = 0.1 g
  • Centigram: 1 cg = 0.01 g
  • Milligram: 1 mg = 0.001 g

1000 kg corresponds to 1 ton

1 t = 1000 kg

Examples

Converting 32g to hg

g - dag - hg

It is necessary to shift the comma two decimal places to the left.

32 g = 0.32 hg

Converting 782 kg into tons

As already described above, a ton is equivalent to 1000 kg. Divide the amount of kg by 1000 which would be the same as changing the decimal point to three decimal places to the left.

782 kg = 0.78 t

surface or area measurements

The default measure of this quantity is: m (2) square

  • 1km (2): 1,000,000m (2) = 106 m (2)
  • 1 hm (2): 10,000 m (2) = 104 m (2)
  • 1 dam (2): 100 m (2) = 102 m (2)
  • m(2): 1 m (2) = 1 m (2)
  • 1 dm (2): 0.01 m (2) = 10-2 m (2)
  • 1 cm (2): 0.0001 m (2) = 10-4 m (2)
  • 1 mm (2): 0.000001 m (2) = 10-6 m (2)

agrarian measures

Default unit is are (a)

1 to = 1 dam (2) square

Hectare (ha) : 1 hm (2) (100 m x 100 m) or (10 x 1000 m) or (1 m x 10000 m) equal to 10,000 m (2)

Centiare (ca): 1 m (2)

Examples

Converting 3.2 hm (2) into m (2)

hm (2) - dam (2) - M2

3.2 hm (2) = 320 dam (2) = 32,000 m (2)

It would be the same as changing the comma to four decimal places to the right since the units are square.

Converting 48.6 dm (2) into m (2)

dm(2) = m(2)

It is necessary to change the comma to two decimal places to the left.

48.6 dm (2) = 0.486 m (2)

Converting 21.7 ha (hectare) into Km (2)

21.7 ha = 21.7 hm (2)

hm (2) - km (2)

The comma must be two decimal places to the left.

21.7 ha = 21.7 hm (2) = 0.217 km (2)

Volume measurements

To find out how many liters are in your water tank, this quantity is used to make this calculation

Standard measurement: cubic meter (m) 3

  • 1 km (3) = 109 m (3)
  • 1 dam (3) = 103 m (3)

m (3) - 1 m (3) = 1 m (3)

1 dm (3) = 10-3 m (3) (equivalent to 1 liter)

1 cm (3) = 10-6 m (3)

1 mm (3) = 10-9 m (3)

Examples

Converting 2578 mm (3) into dm (3)

dm (3) - cm (3) - mm (3)

2,578 mm (3) = 2,578 cm (3) = 0.002,578 dm (3)

Comma must be shifted three decimal places to the left.

Converting 28.3 m (3) into dm (3)

m(3) = dm(3)

It is necessary to change the comma to three decimal places to the right.

28.3 m (3) = 28,300 dm (3)

Time measurements

It is unit of measurement in addition to being part of our daily lives, it is widely used in physics.

Standard measure: (s)

  • 1 hour (h): 3600 seconds (s)
  • 1 minute (min): 60 seconds (s)
  • 1 hour (h): 60 minutes (min)
  • 1 day (h): 24 hours

Examples

Converting 3 hours into seconds

3 x 60 x 60 = 10800 seconds

Convert 3 hours to minutes

3 x 60 = 180 minutes

Converting 180 minutes into seconds

180 x 60 = 10800 seconds
