There, at the back of the drawer, two pencils were together. One was new, beautiful, with a very neat point. But the other one, poor thing! It was sad to behold, its tip was round, only a stump was left of it, from being pointed so much.
The big guy, brand new, looked at the sad figure of his companion and called:
– Hey, shorty! You, down there! Are you listening to me?
– No need to scream – replied the pencil stub – I'm not deaf!
– Not deaf? ha ha ha ha! I thought someone had even cut their ears, from pointing their head so much!
The pencil stub sighed:
– That's right… I've even lost count of how many times I had to face the sharpener… the new pencil continued with the mockery:
– How ugly and broken you are! You must be dying to be with me. See how beautiful and brand new I am!
– I see, I see… but, tell me something, do you know what poetry is?
- Poetry? What is this business?
– Do you know what a love letter is?
- Love? Letter? Have you gone crazy, pencil stub?
– I got everything! crazy, happy, sad, in love! Old and worn too, if so, it was because I lived a lot. I was left with everything I learned from writing so much throughout my life, novel, short story, poetry, narrative, description, composition, theater, chronicle, adventure, everything! Oh, it was worth it to have lived so long, to have written so much, to have written so much, even though it had to end like this, just a stub of pencil and you, brand new pencil, what did you learn?
The big one, which was a beautiful black pencil, turned red with embarrassment…
