Brazil is the richest country in the world in parrots, animals that belong to the family
psittacidae, such as macaws, parrots, parakeets and parrots. So much so that, for some time, it came to be known as the Land of Parrots by Europeans. There are 12 species of national parrots, all belonging to the genus Amazons. The most common species in the country is the Great Blue Parrot, found from Piauí to Rio Grande do Sul. Another very common species is the curica, or mangrove parrot (THE. amazonian), which occurs in the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás and Espírito Santo.
Parrots live an average of 20 years. In captivity, however, they can reach 60 years of age. They have a small body, with a neck, wings and short legs. Brazilian species have green as the main color of their feathers. They are good flyers and very skillful, thanks to the use they make of their feet and beak.
The beak, curved and strong, is capable of breaking very hard seeds. The tongue, thick and sensitive, allows you to easily detect flavors, while helping to manipulate food in your mouth. Parrots also have a chat, where they can store for hours the food that will be given to the baby.
Because they have two toes forward and two toes back on their paws, parrots are called zygodactyls. This feature gives them greater firmness to balance on one paw, while bringing food to their mouth with the other.
Their diet, in nature, is varied, consisting of fruits, seeds, buds, flowers and, eventually, insects. Heart-of-palm seeds are used as food in the Atlantic Forest. Feeding occurs mainly in the early hours of the day and in the late afternoon.
