The term calligraphy refers to the art of writing using beautiful signs to form letters and words. It is considered an art because calligraphy selects the most expressive, elegant and harmonious signs to convey a written message and in this way make it more visual and interesting to the eyes of those who read it, besides being absolutely readable.
And on the other hand, the word calligraphy also refers to the set of characteristics of a person's writing. For example, that letter that is extremely rounded and the dot of the “i” happens in the shape of a big circle, are features that can distinguish someone's way of writing and allow them to be recognized among many calligraphy.
According to scholars, the origin of calligraphy can be found thousands of years ago, approximately in the year two thousand and six hundred before Christ, and in China, a culture that historically has always given great value to everything that has to do with writing and calligraphy. In fact, this fascination can be seen in a good part of the visual beauty presented by the ideograms that form a large part of the writing of this community.
Although calligraphy continues to maintain its strong mark in the East, it was after the invention of the printing press in Gutenberg's hands that calligraphy lost its strength and importance, with typography gaining ground.
Not to mention that with typewriters and computers, handwriting became less and less frequent in our daily life, leaving aside the use of the pen.
In any case, all is not lost and for some calligraphy is still an art and efforts are made to keep it alive and present today, although “others” have won the day. But we can still see calligraphy in our midst through the logos of some companies, on the labels of many products, among others.
Among the different types of calligraphy most common are distinguished: calligraphy composed of Arabic characteristics, Chinese calligraphy, Western and Japanese or shodo.
