Find out what changes in the rules for travel by unaccompanied children

The daughter of public servant Andreia Michelle embarked alone for the first time at the age of five at the Rio de Janeiro Airport, bound for Brasília to meet her father.

With family members in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Manaus, the child, who is now 10 years old, needs legal authorization to traveling alone and visiting family in other states when mother's days off do not coincide with vacations and holidays schoolchildren.

The family was already counting down to put the need for permits aside __ starting next year.

But last March when the National Policy for Searching Missing Persons came into force, the Child and Adolescent Statute was changed and raised the minimum age for boarding children unaccompanied.

The supervisor of the Investigation and Protection Section of the Children and Youth Court of the Federal District and Territories, Ana Luíza Müller, explains the change.

To obtain authorization, the person responsible for the minor must contact the Children and Youth Court or the city court.

In the Federal District, both the airport and the interstate bus station have a post that validates authorization requests.

For each destination, a new document, valid for 90 days, must be made for the round trip.
