And why, now, are your descendants going to Japan?
At the beginning of the 20th century, Brazilian coffee plantations needed labor. The way out of the Brazilian government was to attract immigrants. The timing couldn't be better for the Japanese – there, unemployment was booming because of the mechanization of farming. Another reason that facilitated their coming was a friendship treaty that Brazil and Japan had just signed.
Then, the situation was reversed: Japan became a power and, by the 1980s, it was difficult to afford a living in Brazil because of inflation and unemployment. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Japanese immigrants then saw a great chance of getting along and went en masse to Japan. By 2006, the Brazilian community in the country had already reached 313 people.
