The São Paulo Zoo created an online poll to decide the names of two young lions. They were born on May 18th and were shown to the public on September 19th. Voting ends on September 30 and the result will be announced on October 2, the week that celebrates World Animal Day and Nature Day
Name choices are Naila (meaning the successful one) and Nubia (golden), Aisha (lifetime) and Amira (princess) or Kenya (little queen) and Zaila (female). The two are daughters of the male Iduma, from South Africa, and the female Erindi, from the Netherlands, who also live at the zoo. They are the couple's first children.
Lioness Erindi has been considerate and protective of the cubs, according to the Zoo's press office. According to the source, Iduma tried to take care of the offspring soon after birth, but for being "very playful and somewhat clumsy, as a safety measure, he had to be separated from his family by some time". Now, the lionesses have grown up and the father has been reunited.
According to information released by the Zoo, the puppies cannot be released into the wild because they are very used to the human presence.
The announcement of the result will take place on October 2nd, the week in which a special date for the fauna: World Animal Day, Nature Day and St. Francis of Assisi Day, the patron saint of ecology (04 de October).
