Activity of text interpretation, aimed at eighth grade students, about the Sea horses. Let's get to know them better? So, read the text and, afterwards, be sure to answer the various interpretative questions proposed! Did you know that there are factors that can harm the natural stocks of seahorses? Very serious, isn't it?

Seahorses are bony fish (teleosts) that belong to the genus Hippocampus and to the Syngnathidae family. In the world, there are more than 50 species of seahorses distributed on all continents, in tropical and temperate regions.
The three Brazilian species are found along the coast of our country. Inhabit similar environments, however H. raid, the most easily found species, occupies both estuaries and the sea. Hippocampus erectus and H. patagonicus occupy the marine environment, and records in estuaries are rare.
Seahorses, in tropical regions (average temperature of 28°C), have a period of incubation of eggs around 12 days, with more than 1500 horses, depending on the age of the couple. They reproduce throughout the year and from one year of age onwards, the formed couples are already able to produce more than 1000 fingerlings per pregnancy.
we observe for H. raid, the classic monogamous behavior (in the laboratory), however, was not what happened with H. erectus. In this species there were several behaviors, including males courting males, even in the presence of females. For H. patagonicus, Dr Diego Luzzatto informed (personal communication) that in their studies and cultivation of the species, the pairs presented monogamy, but they eventually switched partners and that the incubation time for eggs is 17-22 days, depending on the temperature.
The three species have very similar behavior and food preferences, which are based on small crustaceans. Seahorses exhibit low mobility and fecundity when compared to other species of teleosts, yet these characteristics would be sufficient for the maintenance of natural stocks, were it not for the pressure imposed through incidental or directed fishing and the environmental degradation causing the loss of habitats.
