Buddha expressed this parable in a sutra:
A man who was going to cross a field came across a tiger. He fled, with the tiger always chasing him. Arriving at a precipice, he grabbed the root of a wild vine and, passing the edge of the precipice, he hung on to it. Above him, the tiger smelled him. Trembling, the man looked down to where, deep inside, another tiger waited for him to fall to devour him. Only the vine sustained him.
Two rats, one white and one black, began, fiber by fiber, to gnaw at the root of the vine. The man saw an appetizing strawberry next to him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!
