Have you ever fallen for an April Fool's Day prank? Yea? The practice of telling lies, no matter how bizarre, on a specific day is very common among children. ____________________, adults also seem to love such a date to make up a fib here or there. Want an example? In 1957, the highly respected British television network BBC showed a story about certain trees in Switzerland that produced noodles. Would you believe that?
In fact, April Fool's Day arose in the 16th century, in France, and was the result of a great misunderstanding.
Until that century, the French followed the Julian calendar. According to the same, the celebration of the New Year would take place on the first day of April. In 1564, King Charles IX established that France should follow the Gregorian calendar, in which the new year begins on the first day of January.
Some French did not accept this change. ____________________, at that time the news moved slowly, ______________________ there was no means of communication. ______________________, many people were not even aware of the change established by the king. _______________________, continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1st.
