Researcher discovers orchid species in Belém

Vanilla Pompona has already been identified in Amapá and Amazonas, but, for the first time, it was cataloged in the Utinga State Park

The existence of the orchid was confirmed Vanilla Pompona in the state of Pará. The discovery increases the geographic distribution of the species, which is used to extract vanilla, a spice widely used in cooking and cosmetics.

THE Vanilla Pompona was found inside Utinga State Park, in Belém, during a visit to catalog plants, as explained by Leandro Ferreira, researcher at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.

After confirmation, the orchid was geographically registered in Pará by the Flora do Brasil website, managed by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.

The plant is classified as an endangered species, as its open vegetation habitat is being systematically destroyed by human activities. Leandro Ferreira says that the job now is to make Utinga State Park visitors aware of the preservation of the species.

In Brazil, in addition to Pará, the Vanilla Pompona it has also been identified in Amazonas and Amapá.
