Barter (exchange of goods) emerged about 10,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period, and has been used for thousands of years around the world. Even the Portuguese, when they arrived in Brazil in 1500, started to exchange goods with the Indians. The barter took place according to the needs of each one – the objects did not need to have equivalent values. Thus, a fisherman who had more fish than he was going to consume could exchange part of it with a farmer who had harvested more corn than necessary, for example.
