Tortoni is the paradigm of porteño coffee, but little is known about its origins. What is known is that a French immigrant, whose last name was Touan decided to open it at the end of 1858 and that the name of the cafe he borrowed from an establishment on the “Boulevard des Italiens”, where the elite of the Parisian culture of the century gathered 19.
At the end of the century, the bar was bought by another Frenchman: Dom Celestino Curutchet. Described by the poet Allende Iragorri as “the typical old French wise man”, with a small body and strong spirit, he sported a classic goatee long, bright-eyed and wearing an Arab skullcap of black silk, almost a comic book character, which gave a peculiar touch to the physiognomy of the place.
The place was frequented by groups of painters, writers, journalists and musicians who formed the “Agrupación de Gente de Artes y Letras”, led by Benito Quinquela Martin. In May 1926, they formed “La Peña” and asked Dom Celestino Curutchet to let them use the basement cellar. The owner accepted, delighted, because, in his words, "artists spend little, but they give the coffee shine and fame."
In this cafe, time seems to have stopped, as in a photograph in which people play pool, cards, or simply have coffee with friends. This place is, more and more, an indispensable part of Buenos Aires history.
