The chorozinho-de-papo-preto is part of the second largest family of birds in the world, the
Thamnophilidae, which includes more than 200 species. But this species is exclusive to the Northeast of Brazil. The name chorozinho-de-papo-preto refers to the set of black feathers that the male has on the chest region, forming a spot that resembles an upside-down triangle. This feature serves to differentiate this species from all others in the family. The female has most of the body orange.
Although the chorozinho-de-papo-preto was described by scientists in 1857, not many details are known about it. It is known that this species lives in pairs, which move through the foliage to the tops of the trees, but can come to the ground in search of insects - such as crickets, grasshoppers, butterflies and moths - to to feed.
Its reproduction takes place from January to May, the rainy season in the Northeast, when the insects that feed it are more abundant. Male and female share the tasks of defending the territory, building the nest, hatching eggs (yes, the male hatches too!), feeding and protecting the chicks. The nest is shaped like a small basket, very thin and resembles a sieve. It is made of different materials, such as vegetable fibers and pieces of leaves.
Despite being small, the chorozinho-de-papo-preto is a brave bird. The male, when angry, ruffles his feathers in order to show himself bigger and stronger than his enemy, in addition to exposing a white spot that is usually hidden on the back. Normally, it is like this in front of its predators, such as the white-tufted tamarin, a species of tamarin native to the Caatinga.
In areas closer to the coast, the destruction of restingas for the construction of houses is a important threat to this bird, having already caused local extinctions, such as in Salvador and parts of the Maranhão. The cutting of firewood for the production of charcoal, the expansion of livestock and agriculture also put the chorozinho-de-papo-preto at risk of disappearing. One of the ways to ensure the conservation of this bird is the creation of protected areas in the environments where it lives.
