A series of five small programs celebrates the life and career of Rei do Ritmo
In the first small program of the series “2019: one hundred years of Jackson do Pandeiro”, you know the story of Jackson do Pandeiro.
Born José Gomes Filho, on August 31, 1919, Jackson do Pandeira was born in Alagoa Grande, Paraíba. His mother, Flora Mourão, was his first music teacher. He moved as a young man with his family to Campina Grande, where he worked as a shoeshine boy and baker's assistant by day, and at night he played at the Eldorado casino. His career began in the 40s, in João Pessoa, when he joined the Tabajara radio orchestra. He also worked on Rádio Jornal Comércio, in Recife, and Rádio Nacional, in Rio de Janeiro.
Jackson played zambumba, drums, bongos and, of course, tambourine. The first big hit came with “Sebastiana”, a song by Rosil Cavalcante. Then came songs like “Forró em Limoeiro”, “O canto da ema”, “Gum with banana”, “Um a um”, which consolidated Jackson do Pandeiro as the Rei do Ritmo.
