Activity of text interpretation, aimed at students in the seventh year of elementary school, about the land islands. Have you ever heard of them? The so-called terrestrial islands are environments with unique characteristics, which contain endemic species, that is, found only in that place. Did you know that Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro is considered a terrestrial island? Will we know more about this subject? To do this, read the text carefully and then answer the various interpretative questions proposed!

Ilha is a portion of dry land surrounded by water on all sides. But isolated environments can also be named. The so-called terrestrial islands are environments with unique characteristics, which contain endemic species, that is, found only in that place.
Scientists have long considered oceanic islands privileged environments for the study of fauna and flora. Because they are isolated from other environments, the islands are places that favor the emergence of new species with their own characteristics. This is because, over thousands of years, the animals, plants and other living beings that live isolated on the islands will becoming different, as contact and reproduction with individuals from other places become increasingly rare and non-existent. As they need to adapt, they change their characteristics to suit the environment. With that, new species can emerge.
Stone mountains, where life forms are completely different from those found in the surrounding woods, are considered terrestrial islands. Sugarloaf Mountain, in Rio de Janeiro, is an example of this. The plants that inhabit it find there an environment very different from the Atlantic Forest, the biome in which Sugarloaf Mountain is located.
Instead of a dense, humid place (with many different vegetables living together and very close to each other), which is typical of Atlantic Forest, Sugarloaf plants need to withstand extreme conditions: with little soil, little water, lots of sun and lots of heat. In order to survive, therefore, they develop their own mechanisms, quite different from those that form forests.
Because they are geographically isolated, Pão de Açúcar plants are not always visited by pollinators and seed dispersers. Therefore, it is common to have species that only grow on a few rocks in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and nowhere else in the world. […]
