Brazil has very advanced research in the area of electrical discharges. This is due to the fact that the country is the world champion in lightning incidence. There are more than 50 million atmospheric discharges per year, which generate an average of 100 deaths and 500 injuries. These numbers mean that, for every 50 deaths by lightning in the world, one occurs in Brazil. Among the fatal victims, 82% are male and 20% of these deaths occur during agricultural activities. In addition to the fatalities, the lightning causes R$ 1 billion in damage to the country each year.
