March 8 story

On March 8, 1857, workers at a textile factory, located in the North American city of New York, staged a great strike. They occupied the factory and began to demand better working conditions, such as a reduction in the daily workload to ten hours (factories required 16 hours of daily work), equalization of salaries with men (women received up to a third of a man's salary to perform the same type of work) and decent treatment within the environment of work.

The demonstration was repressed with total violence. The women were locked inside the factory, which was set on fire. Approximately 130 weavers died carbonized in a totally inhuman act.

However, only in the year 1910, during a conference in Denmark, it was decided that the 8th of March would become “International Women's Day”, in honor of the women who died in the factory in 1857. But only in 1975, through a decree, the date was made official by the UN (United Nations).

Purpose of Date

When this date was created, it was not only intended to commemorate. In most countries, conferences, debates and meetings are held whose objective is to discuss the role of women in today's society. The effort is to try to reduce it and, who knows one day, it will end with prejudice and the devaluation of women. Despite all the advances, they still suffer, in many places, from low wages, male violence, excessive working hours and professional career disadvantages. Much has been achieved, but much remains to be changed in this story.

Achievements of Brazilian Women

We can say that February 24, 1932 was a milestone in the history of Brazilian women. On this date, the female vote was instituted. Women won, after many years of demands and discussions, the right to vote and be elected to executive and legislative positions.

Text Interpretation Activities Women's Day - Report

Text Interpretation Activities Women's Day

In April 2010, around 6:30 am, I suffered an attempted rape. I walked to the bus stop. Across the sidewalk, a man passed by looking at me. I said “good morning”, he didn't respond. I continued walking until I felt a drop of rain. I decided to go back. That same man was on the path again, this time with a hood on his head and his hand in his pocket. When we crossed paths, he took me by the arm, placed a broken bottle on my waist, and said, “I don't want your purse. Come with me, if you scream I'll kill you”. When I realized he was taking me into a thicket, I started screaming for help. He just told me to shut up, brought his body closer to mine, put more and more pressure on my waist, arm, neck and threatened me with death. I let go of him and ran away. He took me by the arm again, squeezed me a lot, saying he would kill me. After a lot of slapping and pulling, I managed to get free and get home. I felt dirty, invaded. Then I identified the attacker. I filed a police report. Perhaps because I was accompanied by my father, everyone respected me at the police station. I will never forget my first appointment with a psychologist. I was dressed in leggings and a purple blouse that fell over my shoulder. After recounting what had happened, she asked me: “But were you dressed like that?”. I felt guilty. I shaved my hair, thinking it might look ugly and attract less attention. In the end, I felt prettier with shaved hair. Strong and ready to fight.
