Romeo and Juliet in a prehistoric version… That's how, in 2013, the press welcomed the great discovery of researcher Silvana Condemi: the identification of the first bone belonging to a mestizo of father sapiens and mother Neanderthal. Genetics had announced, and paleoanthropology confirmed:
Homo neanderthalensis and homo sapiens they mixed their cultures, but also their genes, in the same European territory – and that for more than 5,000 years. But then who is Neanderthal man? A monkey or a fair-skinned redhead? A butcher or a genius hunter who mastered the language and revered his dead? Is it possible he's still with us?
Radically transformed by the eruption of new methods, our prehistory rewrites itself very quickly, bringing huge surprises. In this passionate investigation, the authors trace the most current portrait of our strange ancestor, reviewing the various hypotheses about his supposed disappearance. With that, they reopen the question of our evolutionary “success”, considering the terrible mark that we leave on everything that surrounds us.
