Welcome to the land of gods, philosophers and artists
In the ancient world, there was no country called Greece. There were only the poleis (plural of polis), Greek cities that lived completely independent of each other. They functioned like tiny countries located in fertile fields, separated by mountains that were difficult to cross. Therefore, the main contact between the poles was established by sea.
Let's start our visit to the Greek city at the Gym: the place to practice sports. As the Greeks were passionate about sports, every polis had its gym. Tournaments were a tribute to the gods. And speaking of gods, let's go up to the acropolis. The acropolis - the highest and most fortified place in the polis - housed the religious monuments. Religion was very important in Greece and was present in every moment of people's lives. When a child was born, for example, he was to be introduced to Hestia, the goddess of the home. Also, for the Greeks, nature was full of nymphs—beautiful, young, and mortal deities. That way, when someone felled a tree, he was killing the nymph that lived inside it.
Continuing our journey, we go to Odeão. In this building, theatrical performances took place. The Greeks not only excelled in theatre, but also in sculpture and architecture. Their temples were decorated with beautiful statues and columns. These beautiful buildings were public. This is one of the main differences between Greek civilization and other ancient civilizations, where everything could be decided by the king without listening to the community. In the polis, everything was resolved by the citizens in assemblies. “The Greeks spent a lot of time on the streets, exchanging ideas, getting to know the news,” says Professor Manuel Rolph, from the Fluminense Federal University.
After this trip, you may be asking yourself: why do we need to meet a people who lived so long ago? Greek customs influenced many other cultures, including our own. In addition, Greek thinkers produced works that are still studied throughout the world today.
