GPS is the acronym for Global Positioning System, a system that determines a position on the planet with an accuracy of 3 to 10 meters. It has been working since 1978 and has replaced the compass as it is not as accurate, especially near the poles. The GPS device receives signals from a network of 24 orbiting satellites and calculates the distance between it and the three closest satellites to determine its position. The system, however, is controlled by the American military. If they turn off the GPS, they leave everyone lost (except them, who have a special system). Therefore, the good old compass is still essential in any expedition by land, water or air.
