Frevo, the musical and dance rhythm of the Pernambuco carnival, won […] the title of Cultural Heritage Immaterial of Humanity, granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Among the reasons for the choice are the chains of sociability and dialogue, originating from this dance, generated by young people and implying forms creative ways of interacting in social dynamics and their consequent reinterpretations - such as the use of the art of frevo in theater plays and dance Modern.
In addition, the rhythm contributes to respect for cultural diversity and human creativity, as it is formed by mixing music, dance, capoeira, handicrafts, among others. […].
Frevo emerged at the end of the 19th century in Olinda and Recife, as a form of popular expression in these cities. Since 2007, it has the title of Brazilian Intangible Cultural Heritage. The proposal for inscription at UNESCO for rhythm, the only Brazilian candidate in the selection, was made by the Ministry of Culture and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).
Another 35 nominations were made to join the heritage list, such as the Buddhist chant of Ladakh (India), the traditional braiding of straw hats (Ecuador) and the traditional violin lutherie in Cremona (Italy). According to UNESCO, Intangible Cultural Heritage refers to practices and expressions transmitted from generation to generation such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and events festive.
