Read:
Pangolin (Manis spp.), a mammal belonging to a very ancient order, the Pholidota, which lives in tropical areas of Asia and the Africa, has a small scaly body, apparently hard and strong, but curls up helplessly when threatened. This cuteness is seriously at risk of extinction.
[…] Maybe these animals are little known, but they are the most trafficked mammals in the world.
Although they look invincible with their armor - their bodies are covered with scales composed of keratin, overlapping one to the other. others forming a kind of protective shield – this physical characteristic of theirs is not enough to keep them away from the cruelty of hunters.
There are seven different species representing the Manidae family and all of them suffer various threats especially from hunters and smugglers. Pangolins live in tropical areas of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa (China, Taiwan, northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar). All species are classified as highly vulnerable and endangered.
Pangolins are highly coveted because they are considered a delicacy of Asian cuisine. But not just for that. They are also explored by traditional Asian medicine because it is believed that their scaly skin can improve kidney function, treat asthma and improve psoriasis symptoms.
