We selected in this publication several Activities for Initial Literacy, ready to print and apply to early graders, both in the classroom and for homework.

Currently, the number of people is growing more and more literate in Brazil. This is due to technological advances that nowadays make life much easier for us, teachers.

However, there are still many people who do not have any level of literacy and for this reason are at the margin of society, living outside the zone where the best opportunities appear, both professional and personal.

Initial Literacy Activities

Work out names in the initial series.

• Name tags;

10 Tips to Help Children's Literacy:

These tips are excellent resources that will help in the literacy process:

1. Read aloud to the child daily. From birth to six months, she probably won't understand anything you're reading, but don't worry about that. The idea is for her to become familiar with the sound of her voice and get used to seeing and touching Books.
2. For starters, use Illustrated Books with no texts or few words. Point to the colors and pictures and say their names. Simple books can teach your child things that will help them later in their reading development.
3. For example, she will learn about the structure of the language, that is, that there are spaces between words, and that the writing goes from left to right.
4. Tell Stories. Encourage your child to ask questions and talk about the story they just heard. Ask him if he can guess what will happen next with the characters or situations in the plot as the story unfolds. Point to things in the book that she is able to associate with her daily life. “Look at this drawing of the plane. Do you remember the plane we saw the other day?”
5. Look for Reading Programs. If you are not a good reader, volunteer or government programs exist in your community or city that are geared towards the reading development, may give you the opportunity to improve your own understanding of the texts or teach the correct way to read for the children. Friends and relatives will also be able to read to the children, as well as volunteers who are available and enjoy doing this. You can find them at some community centers or other institutions.
6. Buy a Children's Dictionary. Look for one that has pictures next to the words. So start to develop the habit of, when playing with the child, tease him by saying phrases such as: "Let's find out what this means?"
7. Make sure that Writing Materials, such as pencils, crayons, colored pencils, pens, notepads, notebooks, etc., are always available and in plain sight.
8. Look for watching Educational programs on TV, DVD or the Internet. Discover children's programs where your child can have fun, learn the alphabet and the sounds of each letter.
9. Frequently visit a library. Start by making weekly visits to the library or bookstore while your child is still very young. If possible, make sure he has his own access card and book loan. Many libraries allow the child to have their own personalized card with their name printed, requiring only an adult to be responsible and sign for them.

Literacy Activities – READING SHEETS

The purpose of this activity is to relate the meanings of different words to the world.

Material:

• Old magazines;
• Scissors
• Glue;
• Role scenery.

Participants:

• Write a word on the chalkboard or on a card, for example JOY. Students should select pictures of things that bring people joy. Glue all the pictures onto a sheet of scenario paper, discuss the poster with students, and ask the children to write in their notebooks what they like most.

Possibility:

• Integrate reading and writing words with reading the world.

Literacy Activities – Dynamic Alphabet

The purpose of this Literacy Activities is to stimulate group spirit and auditory and visual perception. Name and recognize the letters of the alphabet.

Material:

• Letters drawn on cards (30x30cm).
• Tokens of words that start those letters.

Development:

• On cardstock, write the letters of the alphabet, one on each card. Tie letters on string to hang around students' necks.
• Place the word cards scattered around the room. Circling the room in silence, students will try to find the word whose initial letter is hanging around their neck.

Possibilities:

• Ask students to copy words like: FRIEND, BEAUTIFUL, MERRY, COURAGEOUS, etc.
  Ask students to copy the words onto a sheet and then decorate them to give to their friend.

Literacy Activities – IS IT HOT or IS IT COLD?

The purpose of these activities is to develop observation and stimulate attention and reasoning.

Material:

• Cardboard
• Atomic pencil.

Development:

• Divide the class into two groups, assigning a color to each. Each student receives a token with a different word. Then you choose one of the words without saying what it is. Start giving tips so that children can find out what it is. Start with a high degree of difficulty and gradually drill down into the information. For example: it's an animal, it's a bird, it's a Brazilian bird, its habitat is the Amazon Forest, the word has “a”... When one of the teams hits the word, the "owner" of the token goes to the board to show the others how it is writing. The team that guesses the most words wins.

Possibilities:

• Integrate this activity with concepts from biology, geography, history and reality themes, such as environmental preservation.
