Amebiasis: what it is, symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment

Strange word, isn't it? Besides Estranha is little known among people, we can say for the vast majority, according to the Dictionary, Amebiasis is a disease caused by amoebas, amoebas? This is an infectious disease, caused by a parasite, this parasite arises from foods that are washed in water that is not so well treated, that is, places that still does not have guaranteed basic sanitation (a real public calamity) with this deficient sanitation, the individual ingests this water and food, generating the parasite that directly attacks the intestine, making it a real health villain, this parasite is also known by a very monstrous name, literally, called Entamoeba Histolyica.

In addition to these causes, the parasite can appear in fecal matter, which is waste eliminated by feces, and the person can also be infected by objects placed in the mouth that have had some contact with the person's feces infected.

Symptoms of Amebiasis

Causes of Amebiasis Risks

Contributors that may be risk factors for parasite infection:

  • Alcoholism
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Maintaining unprotected sex
  • Going to travel to regions with poor sanitation/hygiene conditions
  • malnutrition
  • HIV

This disease rarely affects other organs such as the liver, lung and brain.

Diagnosis is made by examination called Parasitological Feces (EPF), usually it is necessary to collect 3 samples in different days for diagnosis, as trophozoites and cysts are not permanently eliminated by feces.

Treatment of Amebiasis

Now that we know what Amebiasis is, it is very important to look for a specialist doctor (Infectologist, Medical Clinic, Proctology, Gastroenterology) and do all the necessary procedures.

Treatment for less severe cases usually consists of metronizadol medication, for a period of 10 days, orally. Diet and fluid intake is also a very important process.

Ways to prevent Amebiasis

  • Avoid poorly cooked food or food cooked in poor hygiene
  • Wash your hands when handling food
  • Fruits must be well washed, peeled, before being consumed
  • If you do not have filtered water, it is extremely important to boil it before drinking it

It is extremely important to know about the disease and take care, mainly, being an alert for the Brazilian public sanitation, and especially for schools that are present in these risky regions, it is necessary to alert and inform about it, only in this way this disease can be fought in various places, especially places with bad conditions of hygiene.
