Text: THE TRUE BRIGHTNESS OF CHRISTMAS
Dona Bolinha was born in the factory that sold sparkles for Christmas.
The little ball was yellow, round, made of glass and with a well-formed point, which was said to be her navel.
Like all ornaments, it was placed in a cardboard box, along with other balls, and bounced along a path. very far (by truck), until reaching the store, where she stood in the window decorating a white plastic tree.
Beto really wanted to have a Christmas tree. It was his dream. A big tree, like the one in Caloca's house. But Beto's father couldn't buy it.
Every year he promised, but every year something happened and he could never give the tree to Beto.
One day, Beto had an idea.
There on our street there is an empty lot, a vacant lot. Beto decided to plant a tree there and wait until it grew.
She cleared a piece of land… She got some fertilizer with Seu Alexandre, the gardener…
He bought a tiny little pine seedling… And he planted it in the field.
Every day, Beto watered his seedling. He turned the earth around, took out the dry twigs. He was watching not to come up with ants. He took care of the plant as if it were a little people. And the little plant grew, strong and beautiful.
I don't know how long Beto took care of that plant. It took a long time… Until Beto's tree was big, full of branches, a beauty! Ready to become a Christmas tree. (Ruth Rocha)
On Christmas Eve, Romeo and his mother went shopping. In one of the stores, they found a Santa Claus. Romeo, wasting no time, ran to him, sat on his lap and whispered to him what he wanted to gain.
Romeo's mother wanted to know what he had whispered, but he wouldn't tell. They walked, walked, walked. Looked, didn't buy. Everything was expensive!
There, they entered a store that also had a man in red clothes and a white beard. Romeo was looking at him in amazement, thinking that Santa Claus had run out of the other store and came to this one. But then he took a good look and noticed that this one was a little thinner and had a longer beard. So she wanted to do it all over again. He waited in line, sat on his lap and whispered, thinking: – if that other one forgets what I asked, this one remembers!
They walked a little more and Romeo's mother already wanted to go home. But he saw another Santa Claus in another store. So he had an idea. He asked his mother to write down the list of gifts he wanted on various pieces of paper. And he gave one to this Santa Claus. To another, who was on a corner. And to everyone else they encountered along the way.
The mother tried to explain to the boy why she had so many red-clothed, white-bearded gentlemen around town. But he was soon saying: – I already know. It's because there are so many children in the world that one couldn't deliver all the presents! – Flávio de Souza
Once upon a time there was a boy named Nicholas. Nicolau's parents were very wealthy and bought him beautiful gifts. Time passed… Nicolau grew up, studied and became a man. His parents got old and one day they died. The entire family fortune, house, money and farms were left to Nicolau.
At night, when he returned from work, Nicolau would notice the houses on the street and the conversations of people. He then realized that many people were in trouble and needed help. That's when
he decided to help everyone he could. At night, Nicolau would go to the
poor people's house, he hid among the trees and threw money out of the windows. For the children, Nicolau played toys, because he liked children a lot and never forgot them.
When Nicholas died, he went to heaven and found Jesus. There in heaven, Jesus said to Nicholas:
– I really liked what you did for the poor and for the children. By the way, I have an idea: how about you continue taking gifts to all the children in the world?
Nicolau thought the idea was great, but he didn't understand how he could do it. Then Jesus explained:
Once a year, on my birthday, you take the sled here from heaven, with the enchanted reindeer, and travel all over the land leaving presents for the children.
- So nice!
-There is only one thing – said Jesus – from now on you will no longer be called Nicolau. You will be the enchanted father of all the children in the world and that is why you will be called Santa Claus.
Nicolau accepted Jesus' proposal and every year, on Christmas Eve, he takes the enchanted sleigh in heaven and comes to earth to give presents to the little children.

The son sulks at the empty plate, the father asks if he isn't hungry. — I'm hungry, I don't feel like eating old people's food.
From the kitchen the mother says that she decreed "De-cre-tei!" — that he either eats vegetables or goes hungry.
— I don't want my son getting fat now to have health problems later. He just wants chips and meat, meat and chips!
She comes with the plate of steaks, the father takes one, she sits down and takes the other, the son still has an empty plate.
— In the United States — she continues — a journalist spent a month eating only fast food, gained more than six kilos!
— And how did he last a month just eating this?! asked the father.
The son answers:
"Because it's good!" — And he takes a leaf of lettuce with disgust, puts it on the plate and stares as if it were an animal.
The mother says that you have to at least experiment to find out what is and doesn't taste good, and the father says that when he was his age, he ate raw carrots, cucumbers, green mango with salt, he even ate raw green corn.
"And he devoured your grandmother's vegetable stew!" And this lettuce? To eat, you have to put it in your mouth...
The son stuffs the lettuce in his mouth, chews grimacing, takes a steak, the mother jumps in the chair, takes the steak back:
- No sir! Only with real salad, rice, beans, everything!
He keeps looking at his empty plate, until he mumbles,
"If you guys always ate so well, how did you end up with your potbellies?"
The father says that this is about age, the important thing is to be healthy.
— And if you continue to eat only fried foods, meat, sweets and soda, at our age you will weigh over a hundred kilos!
“In Japan,” he mutters, “I could be a sumo wrestler and earn a grade.
— And at Christmas — her mother sings — it's going to be Santa Claus, right? And Rei Momo at the carnival…” “Don't gloat,” says the father. "He's still going to eat everything." When I was a boy, I hated soup. Then one day my mother made soup with alphabet noodles, I started to like soup!
The son asks what alphabet noodles are, the father explains. He pops a slice of tomato into his mouth, the father and mother exchange a victorious look. The father makes a sweet voice:
"You're discovering that salad tastes good, aren't you?"
"No, I took tomatoes to get the disgusting lettuce taste out of my mouth, but I just found out that tomatoes are disgusting too."
— But you eat ketchup, don't you? Because it's made from tomatoes!
— And he doesn't eat eggs either — the mother adds — but he eats mayonnaise, which is made of eggs!
The son is still looking at the empty plate.
"At least eat beans and rice," says the father.
He takes a spoonful of beans, another spoonful of rice saying he saw a movie where they only ate like this in a concentration camp little, just enough to survive... She chews sadly, until her father puts the steak on her plate again, but her mother takes it back again:
"Or salad or nothing!" No sentimental blackmail!
The father eats painfully, the mother eats furiously, the son looks at his plate sadly.
After the mother removes the food, he continues to look at the empty table. In the kitchen, her father whispers to her:
— But he ate two lettuce leaves, can't he eat two pieces of steak?!…
She says no way, this time it's for real; then the father goes to read the newspaper, but in passing by the son, asks him if he wants a steak sandwich—with salad, of course. No, says the son, he just wants to know something about that alphabet soup. The father cheers up:
"Ask, ask!"
"Could you write whatever you wanted with the letters on the plate?"
- Of course! Why, what do you want to write?
— Burger, mayonnaise and ketchup.
He's stubborn like his father, says his mother. Stubborn is the one who persists with me, says the father. The son goes to his room, only leaves at dinner time: noodle soup. So, she writes, and swallows the words: slavery, executioners, disgust, and finally writes love, the father and mother tear, but he explains:
— I'm not done yet, there's no lyrics to write: I love roast beef with french fries...
