What to evaluate:
Taking as a starting point the orientation of the National Curriculum Parameters, school education must be understood as a set of activities designed to help students assimilate content considered in our culture, essential for their personal growth and responsible performance in society in that lives.
It is common, for example, to require a cooperative conduct between students who perform a certain group activity, without any specific work being developed by the teacher in this sense.
Therefore, it is necessary to consider and evaluate procedures, attitudes, values and norms as contents of the same level of concepts and facts, and expand the school's responsibility in this process. This does not mean that there is necessarily an increase in content to be worked on because the contents related to attitudes and procedures should already be present in the daily life of the class. What should happen is that they need to receive greater appreciation and adequate treatment for their learning.
In a proposal that aims to develop skills and not just master content, the idea of assessment should be expanded and go beyond the usual measurement / attribution of grades.
It is intended for checking, as the notes and concepts are not discarded.
The school needs these instruments for its records. In this type of assessment, it is important to inform the student what is being assessed and explain the result, discussing with him the mistakes and successes and not simply informing the grade.
It is equally important to assess student participation and performance in group assignments and their contributions to enrichment of classes with oral reports or research of materials related to the topics being studied.
It should be clear to the student what type of assessment he/she will be submitted to and what will be assessed. The teacher must act with coherence, that is, the assessment situations must be similar to the learning situations.
Encouraging students to do self-assessment is a way of teaching them to analyze their work, develop their critical sense and also their autonomy. Self-assessment must go beyond pointing out your own successes and mistakes. It will allow the student to become aware of their learning process, realize their advances and difficulties and can, together with the teacher, find a way to solve their difficulties.
Especially at this stage, the assessment should have a diagnostic and procedural character when considering the development of students' abilities with respect to learning to read and write, as well as procedures and attitudes.
