The Santa Claus Story

Once upon a time there was a boy named Nicholas. Nicolau's parents were very wealthy and bought him beautiful gifts. Time passed… Nicolau grew up, studied and became a man. His parents got old and one day they died. The entire family fortune, house, money and farms were left to Nicolau.
At night, when he returned from work, Nicolau would notice the houses on the street and the conversations of people. He then realized that a lot of people were in trouble and needed help. That's when
he decided to help everyone he could. At night, Nicolau would go to the
poor people's house, he hid among the trees and threw money out of the windows. For the children, Nicolau played toys, because he liked children a lot and never forgot them.
When Nicholas died, he went to heaven and found Jesus. There in heaven, Jesus said to Nicholas:
– I really liked what you did for the poor and for the children. By the way, I have an idea: how about you continue taking gifts to all the children in the world?

Nicolau thought the idea was great, but he didn't understand how he could do it. Then Jesus explained:
Once a year, on my birthday, you take the sled here from heaven, with the enchanted reindeer, and travel all over the land leaving presents for the children.
- So nice!
-There is only one thing – said Jesus – from now on you will no longer be called Nicolau. You will be the enchanted father of all the children in the world and that is why you will be called Santa Claus.
Nicolau accepted Jesus' proposal and every year, on Christmas Eve, he takes the enchanted sleigh in heaven and comes to earth to give presents to the little children.

Santa Claus: origin and tradition

Scholars claim that the figure of the good old man was inspired by a bishop named Nicholas, who was born in Turkey in 280 AD. Ç. The bishop, a kind-hearted man, used to help poor people, leaving small bags of coins near the chimneys of houses.

He was made a saint (St. Nicholas) after several people reported miracles attributed to him.

The association of the image of St. Nicholas with Christmas took place in Germany and spread around the world in a short time. In the United States he was named Santa Claus, in Brazil Santa Claus and in Portugal Santa Claus.

Until the end of the 19th century, Santa Claus was depicted wearing a brown or dark green winter outfit. In 1886, German cartoonist Thomas Nast created a new image for the good old man. The outfit in red and white, with a black belt, created by Nast was featured in Harper's Weeklys that same year.

In 1931, an advertising campaign for Coca-Cola showed Santa Claus in the same costume created by Nast, which were also the colors of the soft drink. The advertising campaign was a great success, helping to spread the new Santa Claus image around the world.

Currently, the figure of Santa Claus is present in the lives of children around the world, especially during Christmas holidays. He is the good old man with the white beard and red clothes who, on Christmas Eve, brings presents to the children who were obedient and behaved well during the year. He inhabits the North Pole and, with his sleigh, pulled by reindeer, brings joy to families during the Christmas holidays. As they say: Christmas without Santa Claus is not the same thing.
