World Cup Project for Elementary School of Geography and Mathematics

This material is a good opportunity to involve students in work that covers several areas and subjects of the curriculum, ensuring interdisciplinarity, with a differentiated and current focus.

Current approaches to Geography have sought pedagogical practices that allow students to learn different situations of living with places, so that they can build new and more complex understandings of their respect.

From these reflections it is possible to elaborate, together with the class, a new map based on a common interest. In this sense, mathematics allows the development of logical reasoning for measuring data, calculating statistics and organizing tables.

Goals:

  • Introduce or deepen the concepts of country and continent
  • Understand the cartographic language. Identify map title, legends, scale.
  • Use logical reasoning and mathematical language to measure, generate and organize data;
  • Create a new thematic map.

Skills and Competences:

  • Research, analysis and relationships;
  • Logical reasoning, solving mathematical problems:
  • Formulation of concepts, data organization.

Activities:

Iidentification/location:

  • Locate participating countries on the map. Recognize each person's flag and basic information. Identify which group each country belongs to. Find the groups on the map. Compare with continental division map. Reflect on different representations on an apparently identical map.

Math:

  • Generation of data such as percentage relationships from tables and found data. For Example: Relation between participating countries, or ranking probabilities in each group. Organize the data obtained in tables.

Cartography:

  • ANDcreate new maps from the data obtained with the mathematical calculations.
