In Brazil, cariocas were the first to experience the icy delight that had been conquering the world. In 1834, the American ship Madagascar, coming from Boston, landed in the city of Rio de Janeiro with about 200 tons of ice in blocks. The goal: to make ice cream, of course! The ice blocks were stored with sawdust in underground deposits and preserved for approximately five months.
As at that time there was no way to keep the ice cream after it was ready, the ice cream parlors announced the right time to take it, causing an uproar in the city. Even women, who were then prohibited from entering bars, cafes and pastry shops, decided to break protocol and lined up to try the novelty.
Ice cream began to be distributed on an industrial scale in the country in 1941, when in the rented warehouses of the bankrupt factory of Gato Preto ice cream, in Rio de Janeiro, established the U.S. Harkson do Brasil, the first Brazilian industry of Ice cream. Its first release in 1942 was the eski-bon, followed by Chicabon. Eighteen years later, Harkson changed its name to Kibon.
The years passed and the ice cream really fell into the Brazilian taste. According to the Brazilian Association of Ice Cream Industries (ABIS), in 2006 we had a consumption of 507 million liters. But despite the increase in consumption, the rate of around 2.7 liters per person per year is still low, compared to other countries with cold climates or New Zealand, the champion on the list. There the average exceeds 26 liters per inhabitant!
To encourage the consumption of ice cream throughout the year and not just in the summer, ABIS instituted the 23rd of September as the National Ice Cream Day. If you're a fan of the treat, enjoy it, but in moderation. After all, most ice cream contains a high content of saturated and hydrogenated fat. Give preference to fruit popsicles or other non-fat ice cream, which are much healthier.
