At the time of colonization of Brazil, after the year 1500, the Portuguese introduced into our country many characteristics of European culture, such as the June festivals.
But the appearance of these festivals was in the pre-Gregorian period, as a pagan festival in celebration of the great fertility of the land, the good harvests, at the time they called the summer solstice. These celebrations also took place on June 24th, for us, St. John's Day.
These parties were known as Joaninas and were named to honor John the Baptist, cousin of Jesus, who, according to biblical scriptures, liked to baptize people, purifying them for the coming of Jesus.
Thus, it became a commemoration of the Catholic Church, where three saints are honored: on the 13th, the party is for Santo Antônio; on the 24th, to São João; and on the 29th, to San Pedro.
In schools across the country, teachers mainly in the early grades (Early Education and Teaching Elementary), use this popular and traditional celebration to work in the classroom with the students.
