With its long beak, this little bird emits a sound reminiscent of a flute. The boll weevil is very popular and its singing attracts hunters, who capture these animals for cage breeding and display at singing tournaments. Therefore, the boll weevil is very rare and is almost extinct in Brazilian territory.
As might be expected, the name “Bulca” comes from the size of the bird's beak, which is disproportionate to the size of its head. Males are black as adults, with a spot on the outside of the wings and small “brush strokes” of white on the underside of the wings. Females and puppies are brown, in shades of brown. The beak is white or mottled in most individuals.
The boll weevils live in flooded fields and other places where there is water and many seeds – the species' favorite dish – to be broken by their powerful beaks. On some occasions, such as in the breeding season, they can feed on insects and their larvae, which are offered to the young. They also like to eat rice, but this choice is not always good for the boll weevil, because of the pesticides present in the crops.
Bollies like to live with their mate. Zealous with her young, this bird keeps a well-kept and closed nest, lined inside with delicate roots, where the females lay two to three eggs.
Males defend the area where they live from the presence of other males. The dispute both for territory and for the sympathy of the females takes place through singing! To do this, they lift their chests, lower their tails and demonstrate their courage. Of course, the beauty of the boll weevil is actually flying and singing freely in the forest, far from the cages. After all, freedom is the greatest treasure for all birds!
