Syllable Activities for Early Grades

We selected in this post several suggestions for Syllable Activities ready to print and apply to early graders.

Syllable is the phoneme or set of phonemes pronounced in a single voice.

As for the number of syllables, the words can be:

  • monosyllables – have only one syllable: home, foot, sun;
  • dissyllables – have two syllables: ba-ú, a-mor, lu-a, le-tra;
  • trisyllables – have three syllables: vi-a-gem, mú-si-ca, ca-der-no;
  • polysyllables – have four or more syllables: so-ci-e-da-de, gra-má-ti-ca, o-pe-ra-ção.

A monosyllable word can be:

  • unstressed – pronounced with less force. In one sentence, you need to rely on another word. Outside the sentence, it has no meaning of its own. Exs: of, if, to, or, with, in, by, without, and, but, me, him.
  • tonic – pronounced more forcefully. It has its own meaning, even outside the sentence. Exs: want, go, put, no, I know, just, light, dust, sun, there are ten, three.
