Also known as red-crested loon, horned loon, red-crested loon and king loon, the toy soldier is a bird of about 15 cm, the largest of the family. Pripidae, found in the cerrado and Brazilian Pantanal, northeastern Paraguay, and a small stretch of border in northeastern Bolivia.
The little soldier (Galeata Antilophia) presents sexual dimorphism, that is, males and females are very different. The male has black plumage and a striking red forelock on top of his head. It is this topknot, similar to a Roman helmet, that inspired its popular name. The female is olive green, as are the offspring. Young males can take up to three years to display adult plumage.
